Why Fundraising CRM Software?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

A lot of people, even some people within the non-profit industry itself, are rather surprised that most organizations do not use professional CRM Fundraising Software – I’d estimate it’s at only 4% of all non-profits (about 50,000 of the approximately 1.6 million non profits registered in the United States) . These include all the clients from DonorPerfect, Blackbaud, Convio, Exceed, Sage, Donor2, etc. – combined.

Yes, the other 96% tend to use something, like Microsoft Excel or Access, but at the end of the day there’s still very few who take the necessary next step to increase their fundraising performance through CRM fundraising software.

Many of the organizations in this group are typical of one I support- the Camp for All Kids Foundation.

Founded in 1995, the foundation has provided full scholar camperships to low-income middle-school children to private independent residential camps. What’s unique is that the organization’s recipients may continue to receive an annual campership- as long as they continue to meet their school’s academic and citizenship standards and are invited to return by their respective camps.

It’s a fascinating program and as a former camp counselor and assistant camp director, I believe 100% in their mission.

When it comes to fundraising technology, however, they are admittedly a bit behind the times. About 2 months, I had a chat with one of the board members who had a simple question: “Why should anyone buy CRM Fundraising Software?” It seemed like a very reasonable question, and I couldn’t believe that we had exactly ZERO web pages or marketing material that addressed it. In reality, for many years we’ve been operating under an assumption that everyone knows why they need to buy fundraising software, for the same reason as why everyone needs to buy food, shelter, transportation, etc. It was a flawed way of thinking and one we set out to correct. (Note: Apparently, we’re not alone. I checked Intuit Software (makers of Quickbooks accounting software), and they didn’t have anything either that answered the question why one would purchase accounting software in the first place- it was just a given)

As a result, we’ve developed some material, and by far our largest effort was to communicate it through a new marketing channel for us- a YouTube Video.

So here’s the video link that we’ll be using and perhaps we can get the other 96% to consider fundraising software after all. Feel free to pass it along.

When new doesn't work….

Monday, July 16th, 2007

I believe I’ve witnessed something very interesting- and I think we may see more of it in the future.

I’m talking about regressive technology. This is where you buy something new, to replace something old, that in the end is actually worse.

Case in point-

We recently moved to a brand new office with a brand new telephone system. The office is wonderful- nearly double the space and much nicer than our old office. So far so good.

It also came with a brand new phone system. This means that your computer and phone work together, so that you can see the last 100 calls you received, which ones you missed, and which ones went to voicemail- all on your computer screen.

Sounds great? I thought so too. Except the voicemail is terrible. In fact- it sucks.

Our old system was almost 10 years old. Yet, you could rewind messages, slow them down, even speed them up. If you called voice mail from your own phone, it knew it was you so all you had to do was type in a password. You could delete messages in one key stroke. It was fast and simple.

Well- the ‘new, advanced’ one is a little different.

  • It’s slower to retrieve messages. There’s pauses between messages that should be instantaneous.
  • It literally has a bug- when you are finished getting the last message, it goes into an infinite loop, and you need to hang up and call back to do anything else.
  • You can’t fast forward. You can’t slow it down (especially useful for fast talkers). It’s nearly impossible to forward it to anyone- there’s no automatic help to say “To forward, press 1″.
  • If you delete it, it’s gone forever – POOF – even if done accidentally.
  • The first part of the message lists the incoming phone number and time in date- in long drawn out simulated computer talk- before the message begins. Yet another time waster.

It literally blows my mind that we can take such a backward step in something as simple as voicemail, that it got me thinking- New technology is not always better. We really should have done due diligence before accepting our fate, because I’m pretty sure that while frustrating, we are probably going to accept our fate and do nothing.

Sigh.

It’s the same thing with Fundraising Software. Through the years I’ve witnessed countless companies try to rush in with new technology that actually doesn’t hold a candle to what it replaced.

Web 2.0 may fall into that category. While we are certainly in the process of developing new tools, we aren’t jumping into the deep end and forgetting our base product. In fact, the fundraising market has been littered with the corpses of companies that introduced new technology that was inferior to what they already had!

For those of us that wore bell-bottoms when we were kids, this included FundMaster, and more recently, Campagne Associates’ Alchemy product. Both were eventually killed and sold off.

I’m determined more than ever not to repeat their mistakes. As they say, “those that don’t learn from History are doomed to repeat it”.

We’ll be deliberate, yet pursue those technologies that make sense for us and our customers. You’ll be seeing it soon- with our upgrade to Version 9 of DonorPerfect nearly complete, and a brand new initiative that will rock the fundraising world- quite literally.

Stay tuned.

Version 9.0

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

As many of you know, SofterWare offers two versions of DonorPerfect- DonorPerfect Online and a traditional installed solution, DonorPerfect Visual Edition. We actually have separate, dedicated development teams for both products, so that as improvements are made in one, they are duplicated in the other.

Well, after a year ‘under wraps’ our next version of DonorPerfect Visual Edition, version 9.0, is about to debut. And it’s Big. Really BIG.

Version 9.0 sports a completely updated look and feel, as well as greatly improved and easy to use features such as:

  • Automated Acknowledgements
  • Custom Report Wizard
  • ‘MySpace’ like Home Page
  • Improved Administration Controls
  • Quick Gift Entry
  • More/Better Financial Reports & Analytics
  • and much, much more
Here are some screen shots:

My Home Page. Each user can have their own home page which can be individually modified to include commonly used tasks such as searching for donors, processing acknowledgments, or running a specific report. Perfect for executive users who only want to see summary reports and analysis.

Acknowledgement Processing Center. Easily view which gifts need to be thanked, and automatically process acknowledgments with a direct link to Microsoft Word.

Flexibility is the key! Almost every display screen in DonorPerfect can be easily modified to track the information that is important to your organization. The ability to add your own fields, as well as delete (or hide) those fields that are irrelevant to your organization makes DonorPerfect much easier to use than other ‘canned’ systems that contain dozens of screens and thousands of fields that are unnecessary.

Custom Report Wizard. This wizard makes creating custom reports a snap. Select your report design template and then choose your fields, sort order and grouping options. The wizard will create the report at which point you can run the report or design it further with our built in graphical report designer.

Financial Reports made simple! Easy to follow reporting screen makes creating financial reports a snap. Choose from dozens of pre-existing reports, or create and design your own. Easily export to Excel for further analysis!

Currently, our plan is release Version 9.0 before June, so it’s right around the corner!

Interested in trying out Version 9.0? We are currently looking for Beta testers who would like to test drive this new powerful version. If you are interested, please comment here!
