ACT is the grassroots, nonprofit land conservancy serving New Hampshire’s North Country. ACT was founded in 1999 by a group of friends and neighbors who shared a concern about the rapid loss of open lands in their community. After successfully raising the funds to purchase a local property slated for development, the group decided there was a need in the larger area for an organization that could assist in similar efforts.
Rufus Perkins, one of the Founding Members and Board Member at ACT, acknowledged there was a growing need to provide quick and easy access to donor histories for board members, along with the need to track donations. “The main function that we needed was a solution to provide online access to all volunteers at all times. With only one full time executive director and 15 volunteers serving on the Board, we knew that we needed to find some software that was going to be affordable for the smaller size of our organization, but also easy enough to use to get up and running quickly with little or no training.”
Rufus noted, “In the summer of 2010, I had first attended a presentation on ETapestry and was impressed by its capability and cost. Then I discovered DonorPerfect through TechSoup and it was a quick and easy decision. It provides the online access we need. Plus, given the size of our growing donor base, DonorPerfect also is appealing because we know that as we grow, we’ll be able to pay based on affordable record level ranges.
Land Trust Grows Using DonorPerfect’s Flexibility and Anywhere, Anytime Availability
By switching to DonorPerfect, Rufus has seen a number of helpful changes. “The online access to the database and the ability to manage contacts and pull reports was huge for us. Our challenge was to get our fundraising committee and volunteers comfortable and fluent in using the system. With the included recorded webinars and easy to use interface, that is not going to be a problem.”
Rufus further noted, “My experience with DonorPerfect has been very positive since the very start. I find the manuals are complete and clear. My first task with DonorPerfect was to import all of our data into it. After having sought information through tech support, I received it promptly and got the information I needed to import my 300 donors. Less than 2 years later, we have grown our donor database by about 150 donors and growing! I do not consider myself a ‘Master of DonorPerfect’ by any means, but the system has been helpful and worth continuing to learn. We are slowly learning to use its extensive capabilities, and have been very pleased so far.”
Rufus has a parting tip to other land trusts or conservation organizations. “For other land trusts that want to load their DonorPerfect database with property owners from assessor records, you could most likely see a lot more benefit from moving some of those general contacts into donors. Thanks again DonorPerfect!”
